Clinical History:
The patient was an 8 year old male with a heart murmur who had an
incidental finding on a chest film.
Clinical Physical Exam:
Heart murmur.
Clinical Labs:
Non-contributory
Clinical Differential Diagnosis:
Congenital heart disease
Imaging Findings:
A chest film showed an anterior mediastinal mass. An echocardiogram
showed the mass to be cystic (not provided). A chest CT exam showed
the mass to be well circumscribed and containing calcifications.
Imaging Differential Diagnosis:
Cystic teratoma
Operative Findings:
The patient was taken electively to the operating room and the mass
was totally excised.
Pathological Findings:
Pathological examination of the surgical specimen revealed findings
characteristic for a cystic teratoma.
Final Diagnosis:
Teratoma, Anterior Mediastinal
Follow-up and Prognosis:
The patient had an uncomplicated post-operative course.
