Neonatal Ascites

Clinical Presentation:
The abdomen is distended without other evidence of intestinal obstruction. Can be associated with respiratory distress due to in utero urinary tract obstruction, fetal anuria, and pulmonary hypoplasia.

Etiology/Pathophysiology:
Urine escapes from the obstructed urinary tract through calyceal fornices into the perirenal space where it remains loculated forming a urinoma that can decompress into the peritoneum. Associated pleural effusions can be seen.

Pathology:
Not applicable

Imaging Findings:
Hazy abdomen with centralization of the bowel loops.

Neonatal Ascites
