Clinical History:
The patient was a 16 year old female who noticed the development of a midline neck mass.
Clinical Physical Exam:
A large nodule in the thyroid gland was visible and was easily palpable.
Clinical Labs:
Non-contributory
Clinical Differential Diagnosis:
Thyroid adenoma vs. thyroid carcinoma
Imaging Findings:
An outside thyroid ultrasound (not available) showed the nodule to be solid. An outside nuclear medicine scan (not available) showed it to be a cold nodule.
Imaging Differential Diagnosis:
Thyroid adenoma vs. thyroid carcinoma
Operative Findings:
An excisional biopsy was electively performed on via a curvilinear low collar incision. The right lobe of the thyroid gland, containing the mass, was removed. Several lymph node biopsies were performed and were negative for tumor.
Pathological Findings:
Examination of the surgical specimen revealed a well-encapsulated lesion that exhibited findings characteristic for a follicular adenoma.
Final Diagnosis:
Thyroid Adenoma, Follicular
Follow-up and Prognosis:
The patient had an uncomplicated post-operative course.
