Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed

normal tympanogram
A normal tympanogram shows the peak within the box, indicating normal mobility. The amplitude is centered over zero, indicating neutral pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane.

tympanogram contrast
In contrast, this tympanogram shows greatly diminished amplitude indicating decreased mobility of the tympanic membrane. The peak amplitude is skewed to the left, indicating negative pressure in the middle ear. These finding are consistent with fluid in the middle ear associated with acute otitis media or serous otitis media.
