The answer is B. Patients require antibiotics directed against Haemophilus influenzae type b. This patient also requires rifampin prophylaxis to eliminate nasal carriage. Daily direct inspection of the laryngeal structures helps to determine when the patient may be ready for extubation. Steroids are contraindicated. This patient also does not require vaccination as the patient is older than 24 months of age and should acquire natural immunity to H. influenzae.
